When Ruby Goward (Class of 2020) crossed the stage at the University of Tasmania in December 2025, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Performance, it marked more than the end of a degree – it was the celebration of a dream many might have called “niche” or “unusual.”

Selected to deliver the valedictory address at the ceremony, Ruby used the moment not just to reflect on her own journey, but to challenge her fellow graduates to boldly pursue their passions, no matter how unexpected they may seem.

In her address, she spoke about the courage it takes to follow a path that doesn’t always fit neatly into a single box. For Ruby, that path has meant embracing both a love of mathematics and a passion for drama – two disciplines often seen as worlds apart.

“Always follow your own passion,” she urged the audience, reminding them that fulfillment and impact come not from fitting a mould, but from leaning into what genuinely excites and inspires you.

Now, as she prepares to embark on her Masters of Teaching, Ruby is excited to bring that same philosophy into the classroom. She hopes to show her future students that they don’t have to choose between being analytical or creative – that you can love a good formula and the magic of the stage.

Her message is simple but powerful: you don’t have to be one thing or another. You can be both.

Ruby believes there is a place out there for everyone – and more importantly, a community of people who will benefit when you choose to follow your passions wholeheartedly. As she steps into the next chapter of her journey, she does so determined to inspire the next generation to discover their own unique blend of talents and pursue it with confidence.
