We are committed to building strong, lasting foundations in literacy and numeracy for every student.
As an ELC–Year 10 College, our approach provides continuity, rigour and educational excellence across all year levels, ensuring students develop the essential literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge needed for lifelong learning.
Our teaching of literacy and numeracy is informed by the Science of Learning and underpinned by high-impact teaching practices that support deep and meaningful understanding. We believe all students can achieve success when learning is explicit, systematic and responsive to their needs. At Mount Carmel College, we utilise evidence-based strategies such as explicit instruction, effective feedback and differentiated learning to ensure each student makes measurable progress.
In literacy, we focus on nurturing confident and capable readers and writers. Our instruction is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time, with a strong emphasis on phonics, spelling, vocabulary development, reading comprehension and writing. We implement a range of evidence-based approaches, including an early years phonics program, a direct instruction spelling program in Years 3–8 and a structured writing framework that supports students at every stage of their literacy development.
In numeracy, we emphasise the four proficiency strands of the Australian Curriculum: understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. Learning is intentionally sequenced, guiding students from concrete materials, through pictorial representations, to abstract thinking. This approach supports all learners to develop deep, transferable numerical knowledge, while also building confidence and the capacity for independent and critical thinking.
At Mount Carmel College, we believe that excellence in literacy and numeracy is the foundation for success in all learning areas. Through a consistent, evidence-informed approach, we empower our students with the skills and confidence they need – now and into the future.
